In January 2017, the nursing home chain American Senior Communities, was the target of an email scam that compromised the W-2 tax forms of the company’s more than 17,000 employees.
In mid-January, an email was sent to a payroll processor that appeared to be from a company official requesting W-2 tax information. The payroll processor unknowingly provided the information to the offshore phishing scammer.
What information has been compromised?
The compromised information includes all information that appears on an IRS Tax Form W-2, which includes:
- Employee Name
- Employee Address
- Employee Social Security Number
- Employee wage information
