Thirty more households near the Chemours Fayetteville Works plant are receiving bottled water because their private drinking water wells tested above the state’s provisional health goal of 140 parts per trillion.
The samples were collected from 101 wells over four weeks, Oct. 12 through Nov. 15. According to the NC Department of Environmental Quality, in addition to the 30 wells with exceedances, 41 showed detections of GenX below the health goal. Thirty wells showed no detection.
As more private wells have been found to contain GenX, state environmental officials and Chemours have expanded the sampling are to 450 parcels that lie within one mile from the facility’s property boundary.
“Private well sampling will continue until we find where the contamination ends,” said Michael Scott, director of the Division of Waste Management, in a prepared statement. “We will ensure that Chemours is providing bottled water to those homeowners’ with elevated concentrations of GenX, and work with Bladen and Cumberland counties to develop long-terms solutions for clean water.”
Based on the latest sampling results, roughly three-quarters of the total 349 sampled wells near the Chemours plant contain some level of GenX; 115 private well owners are receiving bottled water because of GenX detections above the provisional state health goal.
